WHICH ANIMAL HAS NO PLEURAL CAVITY?
The elephant! (^5 spleen!)
Elephants are capable of snorkelling at great depths. Assuming the bottom of the lung is 2 m below water surface and the pressure there is 150 mm Hg, all the systemic vascular pressures wld have to increase by this amount. if not, perfusion of the tissues would be impossible. however, pressure in the alveoli is close to atmospheric pressure because the air in the alveoli is connected to the surface (thru the elephant's trunk). therefore, near the outer surface of the lung, the pressure changes abruptly from 0 to 150 mm Hg. This creates the basic dilemma faced by the pleural membranes.
Normally, the capillaries of the parietal pleura provide the transudate which becomes the pleural fluid. These vessels are supplied by the systemic circulation. In a snorkelling elephant, the pressure in these capillaries wld be greater than 150 mm Hg. however, the pressure in the pleural space would be close to atmospheric pressure. under these conditions, the great pressure difference would cause the capillaries to rupture or cause massive transudation of fluid.
Evolution's solution has been to replace the pariental pleura with a dense connective tissue. visceral pleura is also greatly thickened. in the absence of the pleural cavity filled with pleural fluid, the two pleural sheets are separated by loose connective tissue that allows sliding of the lungs over the chest wall.
~ hope you enjoyed that fact of the day. =) rem it in case they ever ask it during Who Wants To Be a Millionaire =)
